Abstract

Abstrak. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui dan mendeskripsikan pengalaman dan tantangan terkait social adjustment mahasiswa asing di wilayah Surabaya Raya. Penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian kualitatif menggunakan pendekatan fenomenologi. Informan dalam penelitian sebanyak 5 mahasiswa asing luar wilayah Asia Tenggara. Mahasiswa asing tersebut berasal dari 5 negara, yakni Palestina, Sierra Leone, Korea Selatan, Cina dan Yaman yang saat ini sedang menempuh belajar di berbagai macam Universitas di wilayah Surabaya Raya. Teknik pemilihan informan yaitu menggunakan purposive sampling. Metode pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan secara wawancara mendalam dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini adalah analisis isi (content analysis). Teknik analisis ini merupakan metode yang dirancang untuk mengidentifikasi dan menginterpretasikan makna dalam bentuk rekaman komunikasi, teks, gambar dan mengisolasi bagian kecil dari data yang mewakili untuk menggambarkan atau menjelaskan suatu fenomena Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa asing di Surabaya Raya memahami kesadaran akan budaya, kesediaan untuk menerima nilai-nilai budaya baru, sikap proaktif untuk belajar, dan persiapan belajar sebelumnya. Faktor-faktor mempengaruhi social adjustment mahasiswa asing di Wilayah Surabaya Raya adalah dukungan sosial, kepribadian individu, dan kesiapan belajar juga berperan dalam proses adaptasi sosial di lingkungan baru.

Abstract. The aim of this research is to find out and describe the experiences and challenges related to the social adjustment of foreign students in the Greater Surabaya area. This research uses a type of qualitative research using a phenomenological approach. The informants in the research were 5 foreign students from outside the Southeast Asia region. These foreign students come from 5 countries, namely Palestine, Sierra Leone, South Korea, China and Yemen and are currently studying at various universities in the Greater Surabaya area. The technique for selecting informants is using purposive sampling. Data collection methods were carried out using in-depth interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique in this research is content analysis. This analysis technique is a method designed to identify and interpret meaning in the form of communication recordings, texts, images and isolate small parts of the data that represent to describe or explain a phenomenon. The results of the research show that foreign students in Greater Surabaya understand cultural awareness, willingness to acceptance of new cultural values, a proactive attitude to learning, and prior study preparation. Factors that influence the social adjustment of foreign students in the Greater Surabaya Region are social support, individual personality, and readiness to learn and play a role in the process of social adaptation in a new environment
